The Muwékma Ohlone Tribe of the San Francisco Bay Area during the MAY DAY MARCH on Monday, May 1, 2023, at Roosevelt Park, 901 E. Santa Clara St.
During the event, the Muwékma Tribe presented a Tribal Land Acknowledgement, and The Muwékma Wolwóolum Šawwenikma ’ayye Yiššakma, Muwékma Ohlone Singers and Dancers, and Muwékma Ohlone Tribal Members marched together with everyone who supported the event. Aho!
This past Sunday, April 23, The Muwékma Ohlone Tribe participated in the Earth Day Event: Honoring The Earth, Building A Place Where Everybody Belongs. The event was hosted by The New Museum Los Gatos (NUMU) and Mosaic America.
The Muwekma Tribe welcomed attendees to our Thámien Ohlone ancestral homeland and presented a land acknowledgement. The day was filled with traditional and contemporary practices of belonging, cultural performances, and art-making. Following the land acknowledgement, the Muwekma Ohlone Dance Group and Miwuk relatives sang and danced in our traditional ways. We also set-up an information table and met many wonderful people from the Town of Los Gatos, including the very friendly Mayor Maria Ristow.
Muwékma Vice Chairwoman Monica V. Arellano had this to say about the event, “NUMU is a great partner of the Muwékma Ohlone People. We are so grateful to them for their alliance and tremendous work to educate the public about our Tribe. Earth Day ~ Pire ’I-Túuxi, in our Native Chochenyo language, is a powerful time for us to recognize that we are all here together, and that we are celebrating and honoring God, Mother Earth, the waterways, the land, the air that we breathe, and each other. Aho!”
Horše ‘ukšeere Muwékma Húyyu ‘ayye ‘ITáakikma Húyyukma ~ Great work Muwékma Ambassador Julie Dominguez and Tribal Youth Ambassadors Izekiel Dominguez, Jalyssa Torres, and Lucas Arellano. They did a wonderful job presenting the Muwékma Ohlone Tribal Land Acknowledgement with Muwékma Vice Chairwoman Monica V. Arellano at the Celebration for the 2023 I Love My Librarian Awardee Kathryn Blackmer Reyes
Wonderful Celebration for a wonderful person Kathryn Blackmer Reyes! We are so happy we were able to participate in this event. Kathryn has displayed many exhibitions about the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe of the San Francisco Bay Area for Native American Heritage Month (November) on the 5th floor of the SJSU King Library.
Congratulations Kathy, you are our favorite librarian!!
